Berserk

Berserk is the tale of Gutts, a young mercenary who knows nothing but battle. Born from a corpse and taken in by a mercenary band, it would seem becoming a superhuman warrior was Gutts' destiny. Which is exactly what Berserk is about. Does man truly have free will? Can we make our own destiny? Or are we bound by the laws of fate? These are the themes Miura Kentaro-sensei presents in this superbly told story with unforgettable characters. These questions come up again and again as we see Gutts fighting in various battles and then recruited into The Band of the Hawk by it's charasmatic leader Griffith, a prodigy who would lead this upstart band of mercenaries to greatness, but their glory does not last... After losing everything, Gutts becomes the Black Swordsman, a fearsome warrior who hunts demons and is hunted by them. But will his thirst for vengeance transform Gutts into that which he hunts?

The Hawks do an excellent job of scanslating this superb manga, and it is recommended to all who can handle the scenes of rape and torture and the other brutalities that are only natural in the hellish world Berserk is set in.

The result of this obsession is often slow transformation into something other than human, leading to a gruesome, realistically-depicted death.
